This position is deemed eligible for hybrid telework under DNCR’s Telework Policy.  

Primary Purpose of Position:    
The Circulation & Machine Unit Supervisor will supervise the circulation and machine unit staff and oversee operation of both units. The Circulation Unit is responsible for assigning mail cards, processing outgoing and incoming books and materials, transporting materials to and from US Post Office, assisting with vehicle operation and monitoring maintenance needs, and providing facility support. Circulation also contacts patrons with overdue books to get books returned. The Machine Unit is in charge of maintaining machine inventory, sending out, repairing, and checking in digital audio players and braille e-reading equipment. Both units work cooperatively and cross-train whenever possible.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Supervising 4 direct-report staff, hiring, evaluating, motivating, training, and coaching them. 
  • Using the library’s integrated library system (ILS), KLAS, daily to enter data accurately and train staff on it as needed. 
  • Ensuring that all library materials and equipment are processed in a timely manner and guide and coordinate unit staff to ensure efficient and effective service to patrons using established guidelines and procedures. 
  • Interpreting and explaining library and National Library Service policies and procedures.
  • Operating and training operators to safely use a 2.5-ton delivery truck and deliver library mail.
  • Working under stress and time pressures to meet deadlines. 
Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects with or without an accommodation. 
  • Work involves climbing, crawling, crouching, kneeling, standing, pushing, lifting, pulling.
  • Requires close visual acuity.

Accessible Books and Library Services (ABLS) provides library programs and services to North Carolinians who cannot read standard print due to a visual or physical disability. SLNC ABLS is a part of the network of regional libraries operated by the Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) that performs the functions of a public library. The library circulates 800,000 volumes annually to over 12,000+ eligible patrons through special deposit collections in libraries, hospitals, rest homes, and other institutions and the direct delivery of specially designed playback equipment and books and magazines in large print, Braille, and audio formats to individuals directly free of charge via U.S. Mail.
